But it basically boils down to what NLAER3 said, there is no way metadata can take so much space, but i wanted to know if there was some new magic out there that i wasn't aware of.

To compare the image files you basically zoom in and compare side to side at the same zoom level, if the compression is very mild you would have to substract each pixel in the image from each other, if it gives transparency it is the same, but if gives any pixels out it is compressed.
 
yea, we went through this and ayaka556 's post referenced above is right.

the confusion comes in calling chroma subsampling just "metadata", it's just plain wrong. It does have its use and does affect image quality IF properly used in the processing, which does not seem to be the case in machi's picture from the good ol' eye test.

percival76 's cleaned pic and the original are indistinguishable for me on my pc and my phone screen zooming all the way in, which i will assume covers the vast majority of users, so unless someone with an HDR monitor and an expert in image technology or whatever can chime in on the differences, i'm ok with all sets getting cleaned like that.

TL;DR: it's not metadata, stop calling that, but it is basically negligible data and you're not missing out on anything from the full filesize set :peepoHappy:
 
Ah, if the chroma subsampling is changed that would explain a lot. I did take a look at the "cleaned" file and the JPG quality was also lowered from 99 to 75 meaning it was recompressed as well. Comparing them side-by-side the smaller version is slightly grainier and has some minor JPG artifacts. Whether that's a big deal is up to personal preference. The images could definitely be compressed a bit more compared to the original without affecting the quality at all, but the cleaned version is slightly too aggressive in cutting file size IMO.

Anyway enough nerd talk, let's get back to gooning shall we?
