When these sites keep having "leaks" where all that personal data ends up out there and doxing people, it's clear the intention isn't security. Especially when that data can be legally "bought" and then sold through loopholes such as another entity buying out the one that has said "We won't abuse your data", because the new owner was never under those same claims. Discord for example, say Microsoft bought them out. Discord says "we will never sell your data, but you must verify to see nsfw content". Disc just sits and does its thing for years, building archives of users. It cannot legally sell any of it, so maybe "leaks" happen. Later Microsoft, or someone else, buys out Discord, and suddenly all that data can be sold because there are no restrictions on the new owners.
For a real blackpill moment, ask yourself how many new companies set up with the intent of keeping users' data safe were long con games like this the entire time, running patience plays for years to build enough data to later "buy" with a shell company and then sell as was always going to be the plan.
And remember, this always starts with pearl clutching. It's to "save the children", despite numbers involved in examples there rarely dropping.
