As time passes, if business isn't growing, it's dying. You need to keep streamlining and optimizing for maximum audience retention. I remember Jackie Treehorn saying something like this in The Big Lebowski decades ago lmao.
Sex work is supposedly the oldest profession, but when it started showing up on film in the mid 20th century there was no immediate audience feedback. The potential audience was always limited. It was just a group of people on the fringes of society making something they thought was sexy. There may have been directors or whatnot who were particularly savvy about audience preferences but they were always taking shots in the dark to some degree, and were operating on slim financial margins. You would find a formula and if it worked, you'd deviate from it as little as possible, unless you were making obvious improvements: higher resolution, hotter girls, embiggening, whatever.
The internet, as we know, connected everything. Porn consumption and production were accessible from the comfort of one's home and became more normalized. Stars, profits, and audiences grew exponentially for a while, but the business was centralized enough that resources could be pooled and directed towards high-quality releases. The autonomy offered by Onlyfans pulled the rug, and such a service was really inevitable. Studios like Adulttime tried to provide the same performer benefits earlier, but no one really watched and profits were slim to begin with. Hot women no longer have to bend over for ugly strangers and a camera crew and studio heads, and additionally, now get to keep the lion's share of the profit. The OF business model is also largely a-la-carte, meaning you can juke the viewer on a single piece of mystery content, and if it sucks you can exploit the customer's inborn gambling mentality by baiting them into believing the next purchase will be different. ("Send me $58 for this pack of 10 videos straight to your DMs!" And it's just one 5 minute video chopped into pieces.) If I understand correctly this is the meta now, and it's insanely profitable. Such a model would not be possible if you had to pay a camera crew for a day to produce said mystery content, and pay tech engineers to host it, and data analysts to decide the price, etc. You also miss your most lucrative customers with the old model, as many OF customers have big money that they're only willing to shell out if it comes with the feeling of intimacy. Coked up guy with baseball bat dick and annoying loud cameraman and weird old director detract from that fantasy, and you have no chance of offering the girl money to sleep with you irl or send you a dick rating or whatever.
The mainstream/pro/XXX industry or whatever you want to call it is a legacy business through and through. Everyone has had to cut costs in one way or another to keep up. Everyone gets paid less, and there are less brains on the job, and resources are more focused than ever on retaining the small audience willing to pay for studio porn: old guys and young people who haven't yet had their brains wired to a specific cluster of fetishes. A lot of the newer male talent seems super weird and diminutive to me lol. Many seem to drop out due to straight up court cases if not disillusionment. There's kind of a darkness to it now lol. Like despite the lighting and the sexy performers you can feel the nastiness and/or age of the director/producer coming through.
I doubt anyone read this but I'll wrap by admitting that I love Brazzers.
