Well he deserved those awards given the nominations in those categories. His other films are better than Anora imo but he’s a really great director and visual storyteller and I think him winning all those awards is good for the film industry and Oscars
 
The editing i can definitely see. And I can acknowledge that his films are not the typical Hollywood mainstream flicks.
But let’s also remember that thr Oscars are an industry award and neither a popularity/audience/fans led contest nor run by film critics.
Like look at some of the terrible films that have been nominated for academy awards. Or actors getting one just „because it was their time“.
„The substance“ is a film that’s very different to anything else as well.
With „Anora“ I simply couldn’t start to care about any of the main characters at all. People called it the modern/dirty „Pretty woman“ but with the actual pretty woman movie, I could immediately relate to and empathize with Julia Roberts character.
Maybe I need to give anora another try. I admit I started watching the film when I was horny and basically waiting for the lewd scenes to appear on screen haha (but let down by them more or less)
For me it was the way the main characters behave and talked..just insufferable and annoying. Maybe that’s Sean bakers style..he films like a documentary/mockumentary… I Heard- with his film „Florida project“ he makes you first despise the characters but at the end you kind of feel empathy and sadness for them?
 
to be clear i wasn't laughing at you i just found it ironic that he won those awards for all the things you weren't a fan of lol. i haven't seen it but from everything i've read people think it was a decent film but no one thinks it deserved best picture.
 
It was widely considered that either Anora, Conclave, or The Brutalist would win Best Picture. But most of the backlash comes from the crazy Brazilian fans of I'm Still Here and people who liked The Substance, even though it never had a chance of winning. When you take out these groups of fans who are just upset that their favourite didn't win and listen to people who actually watched the film, most think that Anora was deserving of the awards it received. Both critics and audiences liked it and the director has been on the edge of mainstream recognition for years.
 
I think anyone who started getting naked in the middle of their career should keep getting naked to stay relevant. Anyone who got naked at the beginning has easily sealed their place in the Hollywood spotlight.

So damn sexy in Anora and an excellent performance, been addicted to her since!
