Here’s my brief guide to using the reference feature in Grok Imagine.
All the people in this guide are AI-generated. None of them are real people.

Why use references?
Better results and more creative possibilities. AI images and video can be uncanny, overly-detailed and strange. If you choose references cleverly, you can get amazing results that look like they could be straight from a movie, if that’s your goal.

Disclaimer
References can only be used to make videos for the time being, as far as I can tell. This increases token usage so experimenting is harder, but worth it.

There are character, location and prop references, and all three are exactly what we want. A subject, a background, and an outfit. The shortest way to make a reference is to simply drag-and-drop an image to your prompt, but the following gives more control up-front.

1) Click the plus sign (+), then References, +New.

2) Name the reference. This is called out in the prompt using the @ symbol, so keeping it short but accurate is preferred.
3) Upload images of your reference, and click the Audio one and click “Swap for image”. As far as I can tell, you can’t actually upload your own audio and can only select from their defaults, so it’s totally useless. I typically do 1 detailed face photo, 1 body photo with as few clothes as possible, and one more of either for good measure, usually torso and face.

4) Under the Category dropdown, choose Character, Location or Prop, depending on what you’re making a reference of. Also you can add a description which I've used to correct errors in the video. Like "do not change the body type, do not change the face" etc. Can reinforce cup size, etc. - any important feature.

5) Click Create.

6) Start a new prompt and type “@” to select the new reference. Write your prompt as normal, except instead of saying “the subject”, say “@”. So for example, I would type “@simp walks toward the camera then sits down”.

7) Refer to any additional references in a similar way. For example, “@simp is wearing @outfit standing alone in @location.”

8) Click Generate.

You can edit the reference after it's made by clicking plus (+), then hover over the reference and click the pencil icon.

Try using the face and body of two different people in a single character reference. Make sure the reference for the head is just the head and the image for the body is just the body. This can be really fun if you're creative - the sky's the limit. My favorite vid right now stars a hybrid woman.


Instead of using a location reference, upload an image, hover over it, and select “First Frame”. That guarantees it isn’t changed. Then you can refer to it on future prompts by clicking “+” > Uploads then selecting it. I prefer this way because of higher quality results, especially when paired with adding to the prompt “shaky 35mm film” if it’s shot on film to make it feel seamless.

You can do the above with images from porn. Can’t have nudity as “first frame” so take a screenshot, upload the image to Grok, hover over it and click Precise Edit, then tell it to remove the nude figure(s) only and don't change anything else.


Can’t actually click the nudity because Grok refuses to even recognize nudity, but it will remove it. You can do this to remove people from movie stills, too, if you want your subject . Below is a video of our reference girl added to a still from a Vixen porno:

You can even use nude photos of people in your reference character. Just make sure you prompt them wearing clothes or else it will 100% fail.

Example using porn/nudity still frame as a reference. As you can see it fused the outfits together because I didn't tell it not to. Seeing somebody that doesn't do porn walk onto a porn set is very fun and there are infinite sets/people to choose from.



Try putting two character references in the same prompt, interacting with each other. Sometimes too many character references will just ignore the 3rd reference.

Copy (ctrl+c) your prompts while they’re generating so if they fail, it’s easier to try again.

Try to use a picture of your room as first frame and have a character walk in and sit down. Every time I use the word “bed” it fails so just omit that word.

Also I promise you that the results are much better with real people.

Have you seen moderation go down for short periods of time? Like tonight I got on and had some uploaded references generate videos that. switch fully clothed to thongs (without asking it to) and said reference (after prompting) rubbed dildo up and down butt crack of another uploaded reference (this reference did have thong on in picture that was uploaded). Had like 5 versions and couple extensions go through with no kickback in a row. Tried to push more but then it kept moderating out. Even regnerating the same prompts minutes later modded out.

Grok can do some peril style scenes.Comic Style is not required but it is minor sometimes. Pearl gstring get minor vag shots in images and references to "sex" as a word replacement for vagina or cock can work sometimes. More in image mode.

Does anyone know a prompt that gets consistent pokies, like nipples poking the fabric of the top, i have yet to find something that works consistenly, everything either show nipples on the clothes or ignores it completely. I know that sometimes by detailing the fabric of the top they can happen, but is completely random so far.
 
I used to be able to do this consistently by making the fabric wet, but you need to work language a bit to not make it obvious you want them to have a wet shirt if that makes sense. Alternatively you can work on making the shirt fabric thinner, gossamer like
 
I need a reliable titty bounce prompt if anyone can help me out. It's for a head-on profile shot, girl is holding her huge tits and bouncing them up and down, she's not nude but wearing bra or tank etc. I've tried so many things, I even resorted to "weightlifting her breasts" lol

What is great about asking Grok for prompts is by telling him to "recreate" or copy the pose/thing/happening in an uploaded image and write it on text. Then you can tweak it as you wish.

I find shit get through much better via detailed text rather than uploading an image and write "copy the exact pose, don't change anything else" bs.
Even though Grok is already good if you are as vague as you can get, if you want him to be detailed, you must go with text driven prompts
 
My account got logged out and now logging back in nothing happens, it just refreshes the login page. If I go to grok.com it just redirects me back to the login page unless I remove all cookies, same on another browser too. Is this happening to anyone else? I haven't been using it much at all (not paying for anything) so no idea why it'd kick me out.
