If you download them directly from instagram, they're 3000x2300. The person who posted in the thread likely only screenshot the photos, to be first to post on the thread, or used an inferior downloading service
 
One of my pet peeves. I appreciate the effort users go to post etc, but so many users here (site-wide not just this thread) are screenshotting instead of actually extracting the original, high quality image.
So frustrating. Especially when it's something time sensitive like a insta story or even just socials being nuked etc. Preservation is crucial and crappy screenshots suck :(
