It would be the first step in finding out more.
Alternatively, it is relatively easy to remove watermarks if they are translucent. You just need to select the region that is discolored, and alter the color to make it darker. There is a tutorial that never betrayed me in my university projects :
there are also a bunch of free websites on Google that can do it for you, but i never used it.
