YouTube and really most of the clearnet are inherently kid-unfriendly. At least by the standards of corporate puritans. But saying YouTube in particular is a family site is like saying Reddit is a family site. Sure there’s a family safe veneer but that’s to keep up appearances, past that crust, it’s all the same algorithmic rot & debauchery. Hell, I’m probably on the older side of this site and I genuinely have mixed feelings for younger folk coming up with a heavily sanitized and monitored internet, as on one hand, teens, nevermind kids, shouldn’t have to see cartel funkytown like I did unexpectedly, but the censorship to ensure ‘safety’ requires us to give up personal liberties, and ironically doesn’t provide any real degree of safety, while eroding our own freedoms. Now with these dogshit LLMs bolted on to every fucking digital service, its only going to get worse as it removes the slim chance of a human being in the loop unless there is a *massive* wave of backlash. Anyone not big enough to make waves though, we’re all fucked, and no chance for recourse or reconciliation.
